Hezbollah trying to take control of Beirut
    Big News Network (UPI)
    Friday 9th May, 2008

Large parts of Beirut, including all roads leading to the capital's international airport, have been taken by Hezbollah forces.

After three days of battles with government troops in Lebanon, the Shiite group has also seized two pro-Western television station owned by the Sunni government leader, Saad al-Hariri.

The Red Cross says at least 10 people have been killed and dozens injured.

The violence came after Lebanon's pro-Western government declared Hezbollah's military communications network illegal.

Hezbollah also used a nationwide strike against rising food and fuel prices to step up its attacks on the government.

Hezbollah causin' problems - again... Hezbollah Fighters Sweep Over Much of Beirut’s Muslim Sector May 9, 2008 - Hezbollah fighters show off might by sweeping Sunni rivals out of Beirut’s Muslim sector

] Unchallenged by Lebanon’s army, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah routed Sunnis loyal to the U.S.-allied government and seized control of large swaths of Beirut’s Muslim sector Friday in a telling demonstration of its military prowess. The Shiite fighters' success in three days of street fighting dramatically strengthened the hand of the Hezbollah-led opposition in the bitter political struggle with pro-Western factions over who will guide the country. But Hezbollah leaders signaled they weren’t looking for a bloody showdown by pulling back their fighters late in the day. The group, and gunmen from allied groups, also steered clear of government buildings and made no attempt to advance toward Beirut’s Christian area. The Western-backed government, which holds only a small majority in parliament, and opposition parties led by Hezbollah have been deadlocked for 17 months over the government’s course. Sporadic street clashes had broken out the past year. But combat erupted this week after the Cabinet sought to rein in Hezbollah by ordering the removal of an airport security chief with ties to the group and demanding the dismantling of the movement’s private phone network. The quick humiliation of Sunni fighters — who are far less organized than Hezbollah’s militia — showed the Shiite group is more than strong enough to prevent actions it opposes. More [url:

] Security sources said at least 11 people had been killed and 30 wounded in three days of battles between pro-government gunmen and fighters loyal to Hezbollah, a Shiite political movement with a powerful guerrilla army. The fighting, the worst internal strife since the 1975-90 civil war, was triggered this week after the government took decisions targeting Hezbollah’s military communications network. The group said the government had declared war. In scenes reminiscent of the darkest days of the civil war, young men armed with assault rifles roamed the streets amid smashed cars and smouldering buildings. Fighting died down by mid-morning and Hezbollah and allied fighters were in control as government supporters put down their weapons. Hezbollah gunmen took control of media outlets owned by governing coalition leader Saad al-Hariri, Lebanon’s strongest Sunni politician. Hariri’s television and radio stations went off the air. An opposition source told Reuters that Hezbollah and its allies would maintain road blocks that have paralyzed much of the city since Wednesday, including barricades on routes to the airport, until a resolution of their political conflict. “All issues are linked. Beirut will remain shut until there is a political solution," the source said, referring to the dispute which triggered this week’s violence and the rival sides' broader 17-month-long power struggle. The crisis between the Hezbollah-led opposition, backed by Iran and Syria, and Prime Minister Fouad Siniora’s anti-Syrian cabinet, backed by Washington and its Arab allies, has paralysed the country and left it without a president since November 2007. An influential pro-government leader called for dialogue. “The party (Hezbollah), regardless of its military strength, cannot annul the other," Walid Jumblatt, leader of the Druze minority, told the pro-government LBC television. “Dialogue alone brings results. Running away from dialogue is not useful." [url=http://www.chinapost.com.tw/international/middle%20east/2008/05/10/155732/Iran%2Dbacked%2DHezbollah.htm:

    Egads what a moronic statement

    Noor5;81671:
Hezbollah is the party of God no one can dare to fight it. God will cursh the enemy of Hezbollah.

Hezbollah the party of cut throats, thieves and scum. Does a group who claim to do Gods work ever need to murder? These are not the actions of a people who want peace! Godly people don’t hide behind women and children as shield when they are forced to fight! They only thing Hezbollah succeeds in crushing is their own peoples wills and lives.
